Canadian Tire, Edmonton: Tracking a Leak Through -40°C
Called out to a leaking commercial roof in -40°C Alberta weather, and the only way to find the cause was to get up there and look.
Andy was called out to attend a roof leak at a Canadian Tire store in Edmonton, Alberta. By the time he arrived, the roof was actively leaking into the building, and the temperature was -40°C.
Diagnosing a leak like that means getting onto the roof and finding the actual source, not guessing from the ground. Andy climbed up in conditions the local crew weren't used to seeing a roofer choose to work in, "that crazy Englishman," as he became known on site that day, and traced the water ingress back to the building's HVAC unit. Its overflow outlet had become blocked with built-up snow and ice, so instead of draining away safely, water was backing up and finding its way into the building below.
Working with one team member, Andy cleared the snow and ice from around the unit and opened up the overflow properly, stopping the leak at its actual source rather than patching the symptom.
Outcome
The leak was resolved at its root cause on the same visit, a blocked overflow, not a failed membrane, saving the store a far more disruptive and costly repair.
