Flat Roofing Installation

GRP, EPDM, felt, single-ply or hot melt, Sherford Roofing installs the flat roofing system that actually suits your building, not a one-size answer.

Flat roofs have a poor reputation that's almost entirely down to poor installation, not the materials themselves. A correctly specified and correctly installed flat roof, whatever the covering, is built around the same fundamentals: adequate falls to shed water (a minimum 1:80 finished fall, typically designed at 1:40 to allow for construction tolerance), a warm roof build-up to avoid condensation risk, and detailing that doesn't rely on the membrane alone to do the work at every junction.

Sherford Roofing installs flat roofs across Plymouth and Devon in GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber, felt, single-ply membrane and hot melt systems, specified to BS 6229 and matched to your building, budget and how the roof will be used.

Our Process

Step 1

Specify the System

We assess the roof size, shape, use and budget to recommend the right covering, GRP, EPDM, felt, single-ply or hot melt.

Step 2

Deck & Falls

The deck is prepared and falls built in (via firrings or tapered insulation) to direct water cleanly to outlets.

Step 3

Insulation & Membrane

A warm roof insulation layer is fitted beneath the waterproofing membrane, which is then applied or welded as a continuous system.

Step 4

Detail & Finish

Upstands, trims and outlets are finished as part of the same watertight system, not bolted on afterwards.

UK Standards & Best Practice

Flat roof design and construction follows BS 6229:2003, the UK code of practice covering falls, insulation placement (warm vs cold roof) and detailing, the standard against which a correctly installed flat roof is judged.

Got Questions?

Flat Roofing Installation FAQs

It depends on the roof, GRP suits complex shapes with no seams, EPDM offers excellent flexibility and a long quoted lifespan, single-ply suits larger commercial areas, and hot melt suits inverted warm roofs, balconies and green roofs. Andy will recommend the right system at survey.

GRP systems typically perform for 25+ years, EPDM rubber can be warrantied for 50 years, and single-ply commercial systems vary but 20-30 year manufacturer warranties are common. Poor workmanship, not the materials, is the usual reason flat roofs fail early.

Most modern systems need minimal maintenance but benefit from an annual check of outlets and upstands, and a check after any significant storm.
