Chimney Cowlings Installation
A smoking fireplace or nesting birds in the flue is usually solved with the right cowling, correctly matched to your chimney and appliance.
Not all chimney cowls do the same job. An H-cowl or Super H-cowl creates a stable low-pressure zone that solves persistent downdraught in exposed, windy locations. A rotating cowl uses wind power to actively improve draw. A bird guard mesh cowl stops jackdaws and squirrels nesting in the flue, one of the most common causes of blocked flues and chimney fires. Fit the wrong type and the problem often doesn't go away.
Sherford Roofing fits the correct cowling for your appliance and chimney across Plymouth and Devon, whether that's an open fire, a wood burner, or a disused flue that simply needs capping to keep rain and birds out.
Our Process
Diagnose the Problem
We identify whether the issue is downdraught, blockage, nesting birds, or a disused flue needing weatherproofing, a cowl only fixes the right cause.
Match Cowl to Flue
Cowl type is matched to your appliance (open fire, stove, or disused flue) and flue diameter, and to the HETAS listing where the installation requires it.
Fit & Seal
The old or damaged pot fitting is removed and the new cowl is clamped or mortar-fixed securely to the pot.
Test the Draw
Once fitted, we confirm the fireplace or stove draws correctly before finishing the job.
Chimney Cowlings Installation FAQs
Usually downdraught caused by wind turbulence around the stack, or a flue that's the wrong height relative to the roofline or nearby trees. An anti-downdraught or H-cowl often resolves it, once blockage or a damp flue have been ruled out.
Yes. A rain cap or bird guard on a disused flue stops water and nesting birds getting into the stack, which otherwise causes damp and blocked flues over time.
Sometimes, but only once the flue is confirmed swept, correctly lined, and not the underlying cause. A cowl treats wind-related draught issues, not blockages or an undersized flue.
