Slate & Tiled Roofing Installation

Natural slate, clay tile or concrete tile, Sherford Roofing helps you choose the right covering and installs it to BS 5534, whichever you pick.

Choosing between slate, clay tile and concrete tile comes down to lifespan, weight, cost and appearance. Clay tiles last 60-100 years, are fired through with colour that weathers to a patina rather than fading, and are lighter than concrete, a real advantage on older or weaker roof structures, at roughly 15-25% more cost. Concrete tiles last 30-50 years, have a surface coating that can fade under UV, and are more prone to moss and algae growth in the UK's damp climate, but cost less upfront and are very widely used.

Natural slate sits above both on price and longevity. Sherford Roofing installs all three across Plymouth and Devon, and gives an honest recommendation based on your property, budget and how long you want the roof to last, rather than steering you toward whichever is easiest to fit.

Our Process

Step 1

Compare Materials

We talk through slate, clay and concrete against your budget, the age and structure of your property, and how long you want the roof to last.

Step 2

Strip & Prepare

The existing covering is stripped (on a re-roof) and the structure, membrane and battens prepared for the chosen material.

Step 3

Fix Covering

Your chosen slate or tile is fixed to the BS 5534 pattern for your roof's exposure zone.

Step 4

Ridge, Verge & Flashings

Dry-fix ridge and verge and lead flashings complete a fully weathertight roof.

Got Questions?

Slate & Tiled Roofing Installation FAQs

Clay lasts longer, is lighter, and keeps its colour since it's fired through the tile rather than surface-coated. Concrete costs less upfront but needs more maintenance and fades faster under UV.

Not usually on the same roof plane for aesthetic and performance consistency, but different sections of a property, a main roof and an extension, for example, can use different materials.

Clay tile or natural slate are usually the better fit for older or heritage properties, both for appearance and because they're lighter than concrete on structures that weren't designed for heavier modern loads.
