Dry Ridge Repair

Cracked ridge mortar is the most common route for water into a pitched roof. We replace it with a dry-fix system that doesn't rely on mortar at all.

Cracked or crumbling ridge mortar is worth taking seriously, it's the most common entry point for water on a pitched roof, and a ridge tile can rock and have failed structurally even when the pointing nearby still looks tidy. By the time staining shows on the ceiling below, the felt, insulation and timber have often been wet for some time.

Sherford Roofing repairs failed ridge mortar across Plymouth and Devon, and in most cases converts the ridge to a mechanically-fixed dry ridge system rather than simply re-bedding in mortar, since dry-fix tolerates the thermal and structural movement that caused the original failure.

Our Process

Step 1

Inspect the Ridge

We check whether the ridge tiles themselves have moved (bedding failure) or it's just surface pointing that has degraded, at roof level rather than from the ground.

Step 2

Repoint or Convert

If the tile is solid and it's only the pointing that has failed, we repoint. If the tile has moved, we convert to a dry-fix system rather than re-bedding in mortar that will fail the same way again.

Step 3

Fit & Secure

Ridge tiles are mechanically clipped and fixed, replacing the mortar's role entirely.

Step 4

Check for Water Damage

Felt and battens beneath the ridge are checked for damage from any water that has already tracked in.

Dry Ridge Repair FAQs

Yes, cracked ridge mortar is the most common route for water ingress on a pitched roof and is worth fixing before it becomes a much bigger repair.

Dry-fix is now the standard recommended approach under BS 5534/BS 8612, because it doesn't rely on mortar's tensile strength and tolerates weathering and structural movement far better.

If the tile itself has moved or rocks, re-bedding, or converting to dry-fix, is needed. If it's just the pointing that's degraded but the tile is solid, repointing may be sufficient.
